Spring has finally arrived in Worcester County—and with it, a fresh opportunity to get moving, get outside, and make memories as a family. At Girls on the Run Worcester County, we believe in the power of movement not just for physical health, but for building confidence, connections, and community. Whether you're a runner, a hiker, or just looking for some active fun, here are five great ways to stay active together this spring—right here in our own backyard!
1. Explore Local Trails and Parks
Worcester County is home to some beautiful spots for walking, hiking, and exploring nature. Try a family hike at Rutland State Park in the geographical center of MA...Rutland or take a stroll around West Hill Dam in Uxbridge. Bring a picnic, play trail games, or even turn it into a mini scavenger hunt. Moving together outdoors is a great way to unplug and reconnect.
2. Sign Up for a Family Fun Run or 5K
Spring is race season, and there are plenty of family-friendly runs in the area—including our very own Girls on the Run 5K! You don’t need to be a runner to participate in 5ks; walking, skipping, and dancing across the finish line are all welcome. It’s about showing up, supporting each other, and celebrating what your bodies can do—together.
3. Start a Backyard Obstacle Course
You don’t have to leave home to get active! Gather some cones, chalk, hula hoops, or even pool noodles and build your own obstacle course in the yard or driveway. Time each other, make up silly challenges, or take turns being the course designer. It’s creative, energetic, and tons of fun for all ages.
4. Try a New Activity Together
Have you ever taken a family exercise class? Tried a dance workout in the living room? Local studios often offer drop-in classes for all ages. Pick something new and laugh your way through the learning curve—it’s all about bonding through movement.
5. Join a Community Cleanup Walk
Get some steps in and give back! Spring is a great time to join local cleanup efforts in parks, playgrounds, and trails. Bring gloves, trash bags, and your energy—you’ll be surprised how satisfying and energizing it feels to care for your community together.
Staying active doesn’t have to be complicated—it just takes a little creativity and a willingness to move together. This spring, let’s celebrate our bodies, our families, and our community by getting out and enjoying all that Worcester County has to offer.
Ready to lace up those sneakers? We’ll see you out there!
