Summer Fun

Summer is here in Worcester County, and that means sunshine, free time, and a break from the school year—but it doesn’t have to mean a break from staying healthy and active! At Girls on the Run Worcester County, we know that movement is about more than just exercise—it helps us feel strong, confident, and joyful. Whether you’re a GOTR girl, coach, parent, or supporter, we’ve got simple, fun ways to keep moving all summer long.

1. Create a Summer Movement Challenge

Pick a personal goal for the week: walking a mile, dancing for 10 minutes a day, or trying 5 new activities. Use stickers or a simple chart to track your progress. Invite friends or family to join you and cheer each other on!

2. Explore Local Trails and Parks

Worcester County is full of beautiful places to explore. Visit places like Wachusett Mountain or Purgatory Chasm for a family hike or nature walk. Make it a scavenger hunt by spotting birds, trees, or wildflowers along the way.

3. Host a Backyard (or Park) Obstacle Course

Use jump ropes, hula hoops, cones, or even sidewalk chalk to create a fun obstacle course. Time yourself and try to beat your record—or race a sibling or friend!

4. Join a Local Program or Camp

There are many local summer camps and youth programs in Worcester that offer sports, games, and outdoor adventures. Keep an eye on community centers or town websites for low-cost or free opportunities. Sometimes your local library will have tickets to different spots in the state.

5. Dance Like Nobody's Watching!

Dancing is one of the easiest ways to get moving and have fun. Make a playlist of your favorite upbeat songs and have a living room dance party—or learn a new routine from YouTube or TikTok (with an adult’s OK!).

6. Cool Off With Water Activities

Try water balloon games, run through the sprinkler, or play "freeze tag" with a spray bottle. These are great ways to stay active and cool at the same time!

7. Set a Goal for the Fall

Maybe you want to run your first 5K, learn a new sport, or simply build the habit of moving every day. Summer is a great time to start small and build toward something exciting—like the next Girls on the Run season!

Staying active doesn’t have to be complicated or competitive. It’s about moving your body in a way that feels good and brings you joy. Whether you’re exploring the outdoors, dancing in your room, or running with a friend, you’re building strength—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.

Stay strong, stay confident, and most of all—have fun this summer, Girls on the Run Worcester County!
